While they look like a gas operated 1100, underneath they are basically the long successful Browning recoil operated design.By 1920 the company became Remington Arms Co., Inc. Circa 1929 they changed the safety of the Model 11 to the cross-bolt. In 1930 they added the 20-gauge version of the Model 11 and introduced the three-shot version The Sportsman in 20-gauge. In 1931 they added the 16-gauge Model 11 and added both 16- and 12-gauge to The Sportsman line.
